課程概述

This course explores how and why Earth’s climate comes about. We will not only introduce what a
typical weather condition is over each region on Earth, but also how and why climate, statistic of
weather, varies geographically and even temporally throughout the earth’s history. To understand how
climate system works, this course discuss concepts of radiative transfer, fluid dynamics, and
thermodynamics, with an emphasis of providing an overview of the energy balances that are
important for shaping and maintaining the vertical and meridional temperature profile, which is
crucial for climate.

In a companioning course, general circulation, a in depth discussion of angular momentum balance
and its role in controlling winds will be offered.

課程目標
There are three main goals for this course:
(1) Essential puzzles: have a solid theoretical understanding of the mechanisms shaping the climate
system, including radiative convective equilibrium, meridional energy and momentum transports
(2) Big picture: understand the key factors influencing various mechanisms, apply the theories to the
real world and understand their limitations
(3) Little details:
a. have a vague memories on various factors influencing climate in different
regions, so that you know where to look (when the key factors cannot explain a specific
phenomenon you aim to understand) in the future.
b. Go through exercises in the textbook
carefully, making sure your understanding of the concept is thorough and memorable

To reach these goals, we design a series of activities for you to experience how scientists use models,
observations, and theory to understand past and current climate and make predictions for future
climate.
課程要求
The course is designed to serve as a capstone project for Seniors majoring Atmospheric Sciences. Students are expected to bring all of the related knowledge and skills into the course.
Students from other departments with strong motivations are more than welcome to talk to the instructor before taking the course.
